Event Description

Flint Sparks, Instructor

The Diamond Sutra was one of the pivotal texts that shaped Buddhism in Asia and is one of the foundational sutras on which Zen practice rests. This five-part class will be an introduction to the place the Mahayana texts hold in the development of our Way, as well as a direct look at the Diamond Sutra itself as a beautiful and powerful expression of awakened activity. Please join us for a journey through this remarkable document and its teachings.

Here is a short quote from Mu Soeng’s excellent book:
“What the Buddha sought through his teachings was to establish a healthy relationship between the self and this fleeting, transitory world. This is the essence of the Diamond Sutra: how to view the world around us so that we are not taken in by the mere appearance of things and hence not caught in the suffering that samsara brings.”

Appamada is not just the occasional mindful thought or attentive state of mind, it’s actually a commitment to being attentive. It’s more than just a meditative state of mind, it’s more than just being mindful. It has to do with that primary ethical or moral orientation we have in life, with which we bring into being whatever activity we’re engaged in. Whether in formal meditation, in our interactions with other people, in our social concerns, or in our political choices, it’s the energetic cherishing of what we regard as good.
